The city Messina can be regard as gate to sicily, based on the geographic
situation.
At the northeastern tip of the island,
the city forms a important knot junction for many centuries.
In Messina, the ferries arrive out of entirely Italy.
A ferrie from villa San Giovanni out of Calabria,
needs 25 minutes to arrive in Messina.
Already long planned is a Bridge over the "Stretto di Messina", but until today is this intention not realized. The cost are to high to build a brigde which connects the italian mainland with sicily. The Harbor of Messina is one of the important harbors on all sicily, the depth gear in the waters between italy and sicily could be passed by each kind of ship normally. Messina was also some times haunted by Earthquake,a large part of the city was destroyed 1908. Out of old newspapers you can read that more then 60 000 people died. But the people did not wait and build up messina itself. The harbor counted always as a most important center, where the reconstruction begans. Since the last earthquakes, the buildings in Messina are build rather flatly and contains earthquake neutralizing constructions.
