To talk about Syrakus is like you would talk about history. This finds its origin in the year 734 before christ. Together with the other pearls of the greek epoch, syrakus is awake and thrives grandly. But the city is unlike the others, it seems that the diffrent characters of the greek origin would be concentrated here. The courage and spirit, the adventure, subtlety and genius of the greek culture, reflect itself in this city again. The founders of the city were Hermit out of Corinth and they named the city Sirako, What means so much like swamp. The most meaningful inhabitants of Syrakus were Archimedes the mathematician (287 v. Christ until 212 before christ) and Theocritus, poet (310 before Christ until 250 before christ.)

Settled of the Greeks conquered by the romans (byzantins) and changed repeatedly the domination during the punic war. Syrakus was the most important city of the antique. In the year 450 after Christ, the vandals ran over Syrakus and looted a lot of treasures. The first attempts of Arabic cultures to conquer Sicily fail ca. 725 based on the plague. But 150 years later ca. 878 after christ the city fells into Arabic hands, and after that to get taken in by the normans. In the second world war, bombers destroyed somewhat on syrakus but that city has until today a lot cultural treasures to offer.

Midpoint of the city was and is the peninsula Ortiga, that place where the first greek hermits built there first cottages. The city passed trough many cultures and survived them all. Each epoch has left its traces. So you'll find many diffrent buildings of the greek and roman domination.

From the beginning, therefore the greek epochs you find the Apollo temple (600 before Christ emerged) and the Athene temple (500 before christ) which was reconstruct to a cathedral. That Athene praised temple is the largest found greek temple until today. The Columns hall of the temple are walled up, but the internal columns received very well. Today the temple is named "Santa Maria delle Colonne" one of the Sight in the environment of Syrakus and Sicily.

Also very worthwhile is the old Greek theaters And the remnants of the antique city gate in Syrakus, this have been probably the beginning of the European theater culture. A must for all lovers of the Greek culture.

Further sights would be, Palazzo Bellomo (1300 after christ) Palazzo Rizza or Montalto as well as Palazzo Imperizzeri and Palazzo Bufardeci.
Even the little lanes around these antique buildings have its attraction and load to expanded walks on.

The Night life Of Syrakus or Ortiga is unique, who wants to celebrate the entire night into the next morning, can finde a lot of places where to do. The persons of this area comes out at 22 o'clock because the temperature during the day is too hot. The prettiest acquaintances can be made in warm summer nights in Ortiga and also throughout Sicily, and so nights pass with dance and music till the next morning
